INSIDE INTERVIEW

Also important at the centre: save energy!

Martin Schuch-Bernard interviewed about sensible energy-saving measures at Westfield Donauzentrum

Martin, what are your responsibilities at Westfield Donau Zentrum?

I am responsible for all construction sites at Westfield Donau Zentrum. My responsibilities also include close cooperation with our service providers for cleaning, building services, and security.

We're all groaning under the rising energy prices – how are you dealing with this issue at the centre?

We are trying to save as much energy as possible through various measures, without it affecting our standards. Our priority is our tenants and our customers. We try to strike a balance between energy savings and maintaining a pleasant shopping experience for our customers. New ideas are constantly being sought and we do not hesitate to implement them as quickly as possible.

What measures are being taken?

Measures are being implemented in some areas (see box). The most important thing is that we do not impair the safe and smooth operation in the centre through these measures.

Also new is the waterless urinal, which was installed in the summer. What are the advantages of such urinals?

The urinal was installed in our busiest toilet at Westfield Donau Zentrum. The toilet is located in the OVE next to our tenant Watch & Diamonds. The main advantage of a waterless urinal is, of course, saving water. Additionally, wastewater pipes are protected as there are fewer deposits in the pipe network, and there are no more flushing devices that can break and then need to be replaced.

Is the waterless urinal really odourless?

Yes, it is! The heart of the urinal system is the Sanicus valve. The valve basically works on the principle of gravity. It is made of memory silicone, which has been tested for resistance to 200 different liquids and chemicals and is resistant up to 180 °C. The cohesive forces of the silicone membrane are so great after wetting that the surface of the tube seals itself airtight. The valve opens for the liquids introduced exclusively in the direction of the drain pipe (outflow).

Martin Schuch-Bernard seeks and finds potential savings in the building services sector within the centre.

Is it planned to equip further toilets in the centre with urinals like these?

In time, all urinals in Westfield Donau Zentrum will be replaced with waterless urinals. The old system will no longer be repaired. As soon as there is a defect in the existing system, it will be replaced with the new waterless system.

Finally: do you have a tip for our readers on where and how best to save energy at home?

Often, simple measures are enough to save energy at home. For example, you should try to switch on the light only where it is absolutely necessary, if possible. Take fewer baths and shower more, and not necessarily for 20 minutes. Turn the heating down a little. Only do laundry when it's necessary. Perhaps rinse dishes in the sink with lukewarm water instead of always turning on the dishwasher immediately. All of this helps to save energy relatively easily and without much effort in your own home.
