How Westfield Donau Zentrum is setting new standards with Sanicus
Energy efficiency starts where hundreds of people pass through every day – in shopping centres. At Westfield Donau Zentrum, an innovative pilot project shows how sustainability and comfort can be perfectly combined.
109 urinals, 11,776 m³ of water saved – a milestone
What began as a single measure has grown into a pioneering initiative: the complete conversion to waterless Sanicus urinals is now finished.
The result after 11 months speaks for itself:
- 109 Urinals were converted to the Sanicus system
- 11.776 m³ of water could be saved
- #BetterPlaces: An active contribution to reducing the ecological footprint
Why Sanicus? A look behind the scenes
In the inside interview with Martin Schuch-Bernard – responsible for building services and infrastructure at Westfield Donau Zentrum – one thing becomes clear: the decision in favour of Sanicus was both strategic and sustainable. The heart of the system – the Sanicus valve – operates odourlessly and with minimal maintenance. It opens exclusively towards the drain, preventing deposits from forming in the pipe system.
Sustainability meets everyday practicality
The conversion took place gradually: as soon as a conventional urinal broke down, it was replaced with a Sanicus model. This created a seamless transition with no interruption to operations – a prime example of intelligent infrastructure planning.
Small measures, big impact
The project shows how technical innovations work behind the scenes – while delivering measurable results. With Sanicus, water is not only saved, but maintenance effort is also reduced and the service life of the infrastructure is extended.
